Races raise $25,000 for women’s center

The Durango Double Trail & Road Half Marathons attracted a total of 391 finishers over two days. Eighty-nine runners competed for the trail and road half-marathons that began at Animas Surgical Hospital.

Race organizers said that 391 runners crossed the finish line Oct. 11 and 12 during the Durango Double Trail & Road Half Marathons, with over $25,000 being raised for the Women’s Resource Center.

More than half the field traveled from outside the region to compete, according to a news release issued Friday by Brendan Trimboli, the first-time director of the event. Seventeen states were represented, with 66 runners coming from New Mexico and several dozen from Colorado’s Front Range.

The Double raised about $10,000 last year for the Women’s Resource Center.

“The WRC is so excited to be part of this event,” Liz Mora, director of the center and a race finisher, said in the release. “Women make up such a large percentage of half-marathon participants, so it is wonderful to have a fundrasier like this that combines wellness, fitness and personal empowerment.”

Sunny skies greeted runners both days, with local competitor Dakota Jones winning the men’s titles in Saturday’s trail race and Sunday’s road race.

Trimboli indicated the support for the event – and the early date of filling up the race – are good signs the Double will return in 2015.
