January is National Radon Action Month, and San Juan Basin Public Health and Colorado State University Extension Office will hold free radon testing workshops and provide free radon kits to participants.
Radon is produced by decaying uranium in rocks and soil, which is common across La Plata County. Long-term exposure to radon can lead to lung cancer.
Radon workshops will be held on these dates:
6 p.m. Jan. 17, Archuleta County Extension Office, 344 Colorado Highway 84, Pagosa Springs.11 a.m. Jan. 18, San Juan Basin Public Health office, Larkspur training room, 281 Sawyer Drive, Durango.10 a.m. Jan. 24, Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive, Bayfield.10 a.m. Jan. 29, Archuleta County Extension Office, 344 Colorado Highway 84, Pagosa Springs.5:30 p.m. Jan. 31, San Juan Basin Public Health office, Larkspur training room, 281 Sawyer Drive, Durango.Workshop participants will receive as many free short-term radon test kits as they need and instructions to use them correctly.
