Rain falls on the Demons’ Round 1 at the state meet

Durango’s No. 4 doubles’ ‘fate is in Mullen’s hands, temporarily’

Rain halted play at the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A Girls Tennis state Championships on Thursday at Pueblo City Park.

But there was enough time for Durango High School.

The Demons’ No. 4 doubles team of Ali Carey and Jenni Snowberger lost 7-5, 6-3 to Mullen’s Emily Burless and Ashland Rooney in the first round.

“Weather wasn’t a factor,” DHS head coach Dave Weisfeldt said. “Mullen was very good at placing the ball. Our girls were trying to be aggressive and take it to the net. We made some of our own errors.”

They’ll now wait on Mullen to see if they advance to playbacks.

Should Mullen’s team advance to the finals, everyone they beat will be placed in a consolation bracket to try and win third or fourth place.

“Our fate is in Mullen’s hands temporarily,” Weisfeldt said.

Play will resume at 8 a.m. Friday in Pueblo.

No team scores were announced at the state tournament because the first round was not completed.
