Rain predicted down low, snow in mountains

Showers expected throughout day

Though snow boots won’t be needed today in Durango, an umbrella is highly encouraged. A passing storm that has made its way from Los Angeles to Colorado promises some precipitation.

Travis Booth, a weather forecaster with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, said Wednesday evening that Southwest Colorado’s valleys will see mostly rain, while the mountains will experience some snow at higher altitudes.

The storm, seen over the Los Angeles area Wednesday evening, has made a turn toward the northeast and across western Colorado.

Throughout the day, off-and-on rain showers are to be expected in the area. Scattered thunderstorms are anticipated, as well, he said.

“It’s not really a cold system,” Booth said.

However, snow levels will start at 10,000 feet and will drop to about 7,500 feet in the evening hours.

To those traveling to the San Juan Mountains, wear snow gear. The mountains will experience between 6 to 12 inches of snow at 8,000 feet and above.

The highs for today and Friday in Durango are expected to be in the 50s. The low for Friday morning will be in the mid 20s, so prepare for a chilly commute.

The storm is expected to settle down this evening. Tonight and Friday should be dry, Booth said.
