Rain, snow and t-storms predicted Friday night and Saturday in Durango

Up to a foot of powder predicted for San Juan Mountains
Weather forecasters were calling for a mix of rain, snow and thunderstorms late Friday and early Saturday in Durango. The San Juan Mountains are expected to receive up to a foot of snow.

Forecasters were calling for a mix of rain, snow and thunderstorms overnight Friday in Durango, possibly turning some area roads wet or icy, especially in the mountains, where travelers should be prepared for winter driving, said Chris Cuoco, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.

The storm originated in the Pacific Northwest and pushed its way through Utah and Colorado Friday afternoon. It was expected to bring soggy weather for Saturday. Forecasters predicted mostly rain late Friday and early Saturday, with occasional snow. Winds were expected to be about 5 mph.

After 10 a.m. Saturday, a mix of rain and snow will occur. A thunderstorm also is possible. A half inch of snow is expected in Durango, with up to 3 inches of snow predicted in higher elevations.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the San Juan Mountains, where 6 to 12 inches of snow are expected. The advisory will last until 6 p.m. Saturday night.
