Rain, thunderstorms expected next few days

Stormy weather should give way to warm, sunny weekend
Rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast for the Four Corners for the next few days.

It’s expected to be all rain and thunderstorms for the next few days in Southwest Colorado, but the National Weather Service in Grand Junction said that should give way just in time for a warm, sunny weekend.

According to meteorologist Larry Smith, a low-pressure system in Mexico is expected to make its way toward the Four Corners on Tuesday, which will bring rain and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon.

By Tuesday night into Wednesday, that low-pressure system will continue to bring rain to lower elevations in Durango. In the high country, snowfall could accumulate at elevations above 9,000 feet, Smith said.

In Durango, temperatures will remain in the low 60s, upper 50s for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Smith said residents in the area should exercise the age old cliché of “when thunder roars, go indoors” for the next couple days.

“I worry about folks going hiking out in the middle of nowhere, and a thunderstorm pops up,” he said. “Lightning is one of the biggest weather related hazards that’s out there.”

Smith said the good news is, if you’re not a fan of rain and thunderstorms, the low pressure system is expected to move out of the region by Thursday, making way for sunny, warm days.

From Thursday until Sunday, temperatures are expected to remain in the upper 60s, mid-to-low 70s.
