Grand Junctions bats woke up just in the nick of time, much to the chagrin of the Durango High School baseball team.
The Tigers battled back from a 10-run deficit to clip the Demons 14-13 on Friday in Grand Junction.
They hit the ball late, and we walked some people, DHS head coach Rob Coddington said.
The Demons (6-6, 1-3 Southwestern League) hit the ball well and jumped out to an early lead, going up 10-0 in the second inning against the Tigers (7-4, 2-1 SWL), plating four in the first and six more in the second.
Durango kept at it, leading 12-4 in the fifth inning before Grand Junction pried the floodgates open, scoring 10 in the bottom half of the frame to go up 14-12, including a grand slam off the bat of Tyler Heinsma.
DHS battled back to add one more in the sixth but couldnt get back on top. The leadoff man reached for the Demons in the seventh, but a line-drive double play and a strikeout squelched any attempt at a rally.
We only had one error, Coddington said. They came back and beat us. We let them back into it.
Connor Dugan was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a triple, while Isiah Mayberry was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs for the Demons. Sean Blanchard took the loss on the mound in relief.
DHS will play first-place Montrose at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
