Rare to have these day camps

Adults, kids with special needs gather in Durango
Champions Special Ministries is holding a summer camp this week at The River Church for special-needs campers age 6 and up. Founder Alison Gromer says there’s still time to sign up, and campers can enjoy games, sports, Bible study and other activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Thursday and 12:30 to 8 p.m. Friday. The nondenominational Champions Special Ministries is back in Durango for a second year with a week of day camps for adults and kids with special needs.

“We have openings,” founder Alison Gromer said. “The camp is for adults and children age 6 and up with intellectual, cognitive and physical disabilities.”

The camp is hosted by The River Church, 860 Plymouth Drive. The cost is $265 but will be prorated depending on the number of days. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 12:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Among the activities are dance, soccer, arts and crafts as well as rafting with the Adaptive Sports Association. Fifteen college students lead the activities, and each participant is accompanied by a volunteer “buddy.”

Champion Special Ministries is based in Overland Park, Kansas. Last year, the group held camps in Durango; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Fort Worth, Texas; and Overland Park.

This year there will be camps in Tulsa, Durango, Dallas, Liberty, Missouri, and at an orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

“There are many camps,” Gromer said. “But for special-needs kids and adults, there’s not a lot available.”

Information is available from Gromer at (913) 638-6823.
