“Green Wheat Fields, Auvers” by Vincent Van Gogh has been hidden away at a Virginia estate for decades and will have a new home at the National Gallery of Art.
WASHINGTON – A Vincent Van Gogh painting that has been hidden away at a Virginia estate for decades will have a new home at the National Gallery of Art.
The museum says the rarely seen painting “Green Wheat Fields, Auvers” from 1890 will go on display Friday. It depicts a landscape in bright greens and blues from northern France when Van Gogh was living just north of Paris.
The painting was given to the museum by philanthropist and art collector Paul Mellon. It had been kept in his family’s home in Upperville, Va., since 1955. The painting has only been exhibited once before in the United States in a 1966 show at the National Gallery of Art.
