We have a government by the majority that participates.
It was quite disheartening to see how few people decided to vote in the election. Since these people decided not to vote, we have no idea if it was out of protest, fear or apathy. Their voices were not heard. The result is that we have elected a man who has no experience in government and little regard for any standard of decency that I can see.
He has chosen a climate denier to lead our country’s environmental efforts, an alt-right extremist to his strategic team, and seems committed to subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, which will not only contribute further to our climate crisis, but hurt our environment as a whole.
This is all happening while the majority of voters that did vote wished for his opponent to be our next president.
Those of us that believe that the next administration might not reflect our own personal views must become involved in local organizations and involved in contacting our elected officials.
Phone calls to Rep. Scott Tipton, (970) 259-1490, Sen. Cory Gardner (970) 245-9553 and Sen. Michael Bennet, (970) 259-1710 can easily be made to express your views.
Become involved in local organizations that need more volunteers to get their missions accomplished. Citizens Climate Lobby, www.citizensclimatelobby.org; San Juan Citizens Alliance, www.sanjuancitizens.org; or the La Plata League of Women Voters, www.lwvlaplata.org – just to name a few. Encourage your friends and family to read their local papers and become involved.
