Read for free, get involved in health care

All citizens must inform themselves about issues and then make their voices heard by voting in order for our democracy to function effectively. An enormous issue we now face is health care, which comprises one-sixth of our economy’s expenditures and affects us all.

We need an informed citizenry to be able to help our leaders devise a better health care system. An open and extensive discussion in Congress, with input from providers, industries and recipients of health care must happen before a bill is passed.

We just finished reading The Healing of America by T. R. Reid. He takes his chronic shoulder injury to eight countries (USA, France, U.K., Japan, Switzerland, Canada, Taiwan and India) for treatment and to understand how their health care systems work. It is a conversational and accessible book full of historical and current information about a very complicated subject. We think it will spark questions and discussion as our nation strives to improve health care for all.

Our family has personally benefited from all four health care systems in the U.S. (Veterans Administration, Medicaid/Medicare, self-pay and private insurance), and we want to share a token part of those benefits by donating $1,000 to purchase copies of this book for anyone who wants to read it. You may pick up your free copy at Maria’s Bookshop while supplies last. We ask only that you pass your copy on to someone else when you are finished.

Health care deserves your informed attention.
