Read, think about, and honor the Constitution this week

Celebrating the privilege of our liberty and freedom this year, the 238th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States of America, I urge all Americans to stop a moment and think about the rights and responsibilities this supreme law of the land gives us. It is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life.

The Constitution, however, is not a blanket or open privilege. It carries with it responsibilities as citizens of this great land, including honoring the Constitution itself. What a perfect time to learn more about this important document and celebrate the freedoms it not only gives us but guarantees us as American citizens. Don’t forget – read the Constitution, think about and honor it.

The celebration of the Constitution was first begun by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside Sept. 17-23 annually to be dedicated to the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was signed into law in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
