Record low temps shouldn’t last long

So, go ahead and prepare for lovely spring days ahead
So, go ahead and prepare for lovely spring days ahead

Spring has been interrupted with frigid temperatures that were expected to reach a record low Tuesday night in Durango.

The record low for May 14 was set in 1942 with a temperature of 24 degrees, Nolan Doesken, state climatologist at Colorado State University, said.

Weather forecasters had predicted the mercury could dip as low as 21 degrees Tuesday night.

Small storms are typical for springtime. However, most of these storms usually happen in April, said Matthew Aleksa, with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.

The most recent storm hit Southwest Colorado on Saturday and lingered through Tuesday morning.

The San Juan Mountains accumulated 10 inches to 18 inches of snow in the storm, he said.

The low-pressure system that brought all of that heavy rain and snow to the mountains has moved off and is headed east over the Great Plains, he said.

A high-pressure system is expected to replace the cold front – meaning warmer temperatures and drier conditions are expected the remainder of the week, he said.
