Red flag warning issued for La Plata County

40 mph wind gusts could create critical fire conditions
Durango Herald file

A flag warning has been issued from noon to 9 p.m. Friday for Durango.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning from noon to 9 p.m. Friday for La Plata County.

A red flag warning means weather conditions could create an environment prone to critical fires. The National Weather Service expects 15 to 25 mph winds, with gusts up to 40 mph.

“We’re going to be pretty dry and breezy on Friday,” said Andrew Lyons, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Grand Junction. “There’s definitely some enhanced fire potential.”

La Plata County has been under Stage 1 fire restrictions , which prevents campfires and open burns, since May 1.

The weekend will also be mostly dry, with temperatures expected to reach the mid 70s, Lyons said.
