Red Mountain Pass reopens; chain laws remain in place

Snowy conditions persist on U.S. Highway 550 north of Hermosa, as shown on this Colorado Department of Transportation camera. Chain laws are in effect for most regional mountain passes.

Red Mountain Pass on U.S. Highway 550 reopened about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, although chain laws remain in effect.

The pass had been closed since Monday because of weather conditions and avalanche danger.

The chain law for commercial vehicles also remains in effect for Coal Bank and Molas passes on Highway 550, as well as for Wolf Creek Pass on U.S. Highway 160 and Lizard Head Pass on Colorado Highway 145.

Snow is expected to continue in the region through the weekend, and avalanche danger remains high throughout Southwest Colorado, according to the National Weather Service.
