After being closed for two days because of inclement weather, Red Mountain Pass reopened on Tuesday, according to a news release from the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management.

U.S. Highway 550 between Silverton and Ouray reopened shortly after 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

The closure was put into place early Sunday morning when extremely adverse weather conditions impacted Red Mountain Pass. Colorado Department of Transportation Maintenance crews performed operations Sunday through Tuesday to mitigate avalanches and clear numerous natural slides from the road.

The weekend storm reportedly brought roughly 9 inches to Silverton and even more in the higher elevations. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center still rates the Red Mountain Pass and Ouray area as “considerable” for avalanche danger.

CDOT advises that travelers be aware that during the winter season, snow conditions may require additional maintenance work and safety closures at any time on many southwest Colorado highways.
