CDOT crews to conduct avalanche work, snow removal
Durango Herald file

Red Mountain Pass will close about noon Monday for avalanche mitigation work and snow removal. There was no estimated time of reopening.

U.S. Highway 550 on Red Mountain Pass will be closed starting at noon Monday as crews conduct avalanche control work and clear snow from the road.

The Colorado Department of Transportation sent out a notice about the closure Monday morning, advising drivers to expect a lengthy closure between Silverton and Ouray.

The south closure point will be located at mile post 87, near Ironton, and the north closure point will be located at Ouray’s south end, near mile post 91.

“This US 550 closure is for the safety of the traveling public due to conditions resulting from significant snow accumulations,” CDOT said in a news release. “CDOT crews will conduct snow removal operations, including avalanche control work throughout the afternoon.”

There is no estimated time for the reopening of the highway.
