Refrain from feeding birds while bears are still active

The La Plata County Living with Wildlife Advisory Board reminds residents to refrain from feeding birds as all the bears may not be in their winter dens yet. Be aware that bears may be drawn to bird feeders as they try to put on as much fat as possible before hibernating.

Do not feed birds while bears are active. However, if you are feeding birds, be aware that bears may be drawn to your feeders. This time of year, bears are trying to add as much fat as possible for a food-less winter.

Remember to bring in feeders at night and clean any fallen seed or suet. Also, wash out food containers that you plan to put into recycle bins.
