Bureau plans move to bigger forensics lab

ARVADA – The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is moving its forensic lab to a bigger building to accommodate a rising demand for DNA analysis.

The CBI will move into industrial building in Arvada that is three times the size of the Lakewood lab it operated for more than 20 years. Officials say the lab will have state-of-the-art equipment for DNA analysis of crime-scene evidence, which has become more important in criminal cases.

CBI says its DNA caseload has increased because of a 2013 state law tightening requirements for testing evidence from sex assaults. The agency says the new lab will help improve turnaround time.

Organizer cancels Boulder Marathon

BOULDER – Organizers are blaming last year’s floods and recent deaths in the running community for their decision to cancel the annual Boulder Marathon.

The sudden cancellation of the Oct. 5 race confused and angered some would-be competitors.

Race Director Jeff Mason said the decision was fueled in part by the deaths of 20-year-old Jessica Dillon during May’s Boulder Spring Half Marathon and 53-year-old Lesley Kinder, founder and former director of the Boulder Backroads Marathon.

Mason purchased the race from Kinder in 2007.

Cory Gardner slams Obama in GOP address

DENVER – U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner, locked in a tight challenge to Democratic Senator Mark Udall, gave the Republican Party’s national radio address Saturday, slamming President Barack Obama and Senate Democrats for delaying the construction of the Keystone Pipeline.

Gardner contended that the six-year delay in construction of the pipeline that would ferry oil from Canada to U.S. ports deprives the country of jobs.

“Thousands of Americans are missing out on the good-paying jobs the pipeline would create,” he said.

The pipeline would not pass through Colorado, and most of the predicted jobs would be temporary construction work. But Republicans have hammered Udall over the issue. The incumbent voted against plans to approve the pipeline in June, though Udall’s office said that was because he did not want to inject politics into its approval process.
