ARVADA – The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has moved its lab for fingerprint, ballistics, DNA and other testing from Lakewood to Arvada.
The Denver Post reports CBI held a grand opening last month after a $7 million renovation. Lab manager Aaron Koning says the new 26,000-square-foot facility is nearly three times the size of the Lakewood facility. Koning says he expects the move to improve efficiency and speed.
DENVER – Denver’s district attorney won’t pursue charges against police who shot and killed a parolee who had hijacked a vehicle, led officers on an afternoon chase in a residential neighborhood and shot at them, wounding one.
DA Mitch Morrissey says Gerardino Cayetano-Gonzalez endangered officers and the public and appeared determined to escape or die.
EVANS – Residents of the Weld County city of Evans are praising a police officer who helped rescue their dog, which had been trapped in a crawlspace under a nearby home.
The Greeley Tribune reports that Mike Linn’s 6-year-old dog Tanka got out after he left the gate to his home open, and after four days, he was sure she was gone for good. Evans Police Department’s community service technician Deidra Jesmer found the dog on May 18 after a neighbor called about hearing a crying animal under their home.
Jesmer was able to crawl under the home and hook a net around the dog, pulling her out.
SANTA FE – Former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is pleading no contest to charges of driving away from a traffic accident without notice.
Richardson dialed in remotely to a court hearing Friday and agreed to pay $56 in costs and complete a defense driving class under the judgment.
In January, Richardson rear-ended another vehicle at low speed in downtown Santa Fe, drove off and was tracked down quickly by police. A police video shows Richardson initially feigning ignorance before acknowledging that he bumped into another car and didn’t pull over.
ALBUQUERQUE – A 14-year-old Albuquerque boy has been charged with running over a man before dragging him to his death.
The 14-year-old was arrested Wednesday for murder, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and evidence tampering.
According to a probable cause statement, the teen picked up a prostitute while driving a stolen SUV on May 20. He stopped outside an apartment complex, where 46-year-old Richard Sisneros yelled at him to leave. Witnesses say he ran over Sisneros several times, dragging his body down the street.
