Region plans events to celebrate Independence Day

Fireworks, parades, carnivals on tap
Fireworks will begin at dusk on July 4 in Silverton, Bayfield, Cortez and Mancos. The Durango fireworks show was canceled because of weather conditions and the Lightner Creek Fire.

There are a variety of events in the area to celebrate Independence Day, and although fire restrictions are in place throughout the region, the fireworks shows had not been canceled as of Thursday. Officials said they will continue to monitor fire and weather conditions ahead of the Tuesday holiday.

Events kick off Saturday on Lake Vallecito, where the Vallecito Service League will host the 34th annual arts and crafts fair, a two-day event in the meadow below Vallecito Dam. Fireworks will occur Saturday night over Vallecito Dam.

Saturday also marks the beginning of Independents Week, a weeklong event to celebrate local businesses in La Plata County. A passport challenge will be a part of the celebration. Community members will get their passport stamped every time they spend more than $5 at a local business during the week, with a chance to win a $200 cash prize.
