Regional recap: Durango girls defeat Montrose

The Durango High School girls basketball team extended its winning streak to 14 games on Friday with a 44-26 win over Montrose.

DHS entered the game ranked No. 4 in Class 5A while Montrose received the 11th most votes. The Demons, however, jumped all over the Red Hawks early and led 16-3 after the first quarter. The game was closer after that, but DHS never relinquished its lead and improved to 14-1 overall and 3-0 in the 6A/5A Southwestern conference with the victory, while Montrose slid to 10-5, 0-3.

The Demons were also schedule to face league foe Fruita Monument (12-3, 1-0) on Saturday.

DHS boys come up short

The DHS boys fell to the Red Hawks 42-34 after the girls’ game.

The Demons held a slim 9-7 lead after the first quarter, but went into halftime trailing 17-14. The third and fourth quarters were also close, but Montrose edged DHS in each to finish on top.

Jacob Nuebert scored 11 points to lead DHS. Zach Unruh followed with six, while Dylan Bettin and Noah Miles both scored five.

After the loss, DHS was 5-11 overall and 1-2 in the league while MHS improved to 11-4, 2-1. DHS was also scheduled to play the league-leading Fruita Monument Wildcats (14-1, 1-0) on Saturday.

Ignacio falls to Falcon squads

The Ignacio boys and girls basketball teams both traveled to La Jara on Friday to play the Centauri Falcons, but both IHS squads came up short.

The Ignacio girls (7-5, 1-2) fell to the 4A/3A Intermountain League-leading Falcons (12-2, 5-0) 52-26.

The IHS boys (3-9, 0-4) then took the court, but were unable to get their first league win. Centauri’s boys prevailed 50-33 to improve to 12-2, 4-1.

Mean Moose tame Wolverines

The league-leading boys from Alamosa, meanwhile, stayed perfect in league play with a 75-55 win over Bayfield on Friday at BHS.

Jackson Queen went off for 27 points and Lance Mazur added 15 for BHS, but the Moose led 17-8 after the first quarter and continued to pull away in the second and third quarters.

BHS slipped to 6-7, 1-4 with the los,s while Alamosa improved to 12-1, 4-0.

In the girls’ game, Alamosa prevailed 57-22, taking a 17-1 lead into the second and a 36-8 advantage into halftime.

Renae Foutz, Genesis Barrera and Michele Kirk all scored five points to lead BHS.

The Bayfield girls are now 2-9, 0-5, and Alamosa improved to 10-4, 3-1.
