Regis finishes off FLC late

Spencer stars in goal for Skyhawks

Sometimes you just come up short.

The Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team lost 10-6 at Regis one day after beating the No. 11 team in the country.

“There’s a lot of different types of games,” FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald said. “(Sunday’s) kind of game was we played very well, we hung in there mentally and physically, but we came up short.”

Regis (10-3, 3-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) scored the game’s first four goals before Kathryn Dunn put the Skyhawks on the board with 17 minutes, 29 seconds left in the first period.

FLC (7-6, 3-2 RMAC) cut the deficit to 4-3 on Dunn’s second goal of the game with under seven minutes until halftime, but the Rangers scored twice before the halftime whistle to stretch their lead to 6-3.

“It wasn’t too big of a deficit. They did jump out on us early, but we did a good job of cutting it to two,” MacDonald said. “It was a close game the whole way. We started off a little slow, but we fixed it.”

Dunn completed her hat trick 6½ minutes into the second half.

Regis scored twice more before Jam Vertner could bring the Skyhawks within two with a pair of goals.

The Rangers put the game away with two more scores after that, though.

“At the end we decided we needed to go out and pressure the ball, and they capitalized on that,” MacDonald said. “As a coaching decision, we decided that would be better.”

Dunn led FLC with three goals, while Vertner scored twice, and Ellie Carpenter once.

Alyssa Spencer, a Durango High School alumna, made 14 saves for FLC.

“She definitely kept us in the game for sure,” MacDonald said.

Those saves came under a tremendous amount of pressure, too.

Regis outshot FLC 29-18 and put 24 of them on goal.

Erin Todd had four goals to lead Regis.

The Skyhawks return home for their next game at 2 p.m. Saturday against Adams State.

“We need to continue to play well all over the field,” MacDonald said. “On attack, we need to definitely work on capitalizing more on our opportunities and get back in to the swing of things scoring-wise.”

Snowstorm cancels FLC softball at Metro State

Snow ended the Fort Lewis College softball team’s series against Metro State prematurely.

Metro won both of Saturday’s games before inclement weather forced the cancellation of Sunday’s doubleheader.

It was the first games FLC (21-21, 17-13 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) has had cancelled all season.

The Skyhawks will host the UC-Colorado Springs at 12 p.m. Friday in a doubleheader.

That four-game series against the Mountain Lions will be FLC’s final home games of the season.
