The Fort Lewis College men’s basketball team squared off with Regis University on Friday, with second place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference on the line.
Fort Lewis jumped out to a 9-2 lead, but Regis rallied and took a 43-32 lead into halftime.
The Skyhawks closed to within four points of the Rangers late in the second half, but never quite caught up, and Regis escaped with an 81-71 win.
It was Regis’ ninth consecutive win and bumped their record to 9-1, 4-0 RMAC. FLC slipped to 7-4, 3-2.
Two Skyhawks also got hurt in the game and didn’t return: Akuel Kot and Will Wittman. Kot actually got called for a foul on the play he got hurt on.
Assistant coaches on both teams also got called for technical fouls after arguing with the refs.
Riley Farris scored 22 points to lead FLC.
Dunnell Stafford got hot in the second half, helping FLC cut Regis’ lead from 59-51 to 59-58 with seven straight points. Stafford finished with 16 points while Corey Seng added 12, Jacquess Hobbs scored seven and Logan Hokanson added five.
Kevin Ebiriekwe led Regis with 21.
The Skyhawks will return to Whalen on Saturday to take on Colorado School of Mines. The FLC women will play first at 5 p.m., followed by the men at about 7 p.m.
