City leaders are asking citizens to reimagine a new and improved downtown. Soon the council will give its nod to one of four conceptual designs all with the common denominator of reduced parking. Many locals are asking where shoppers will park. The city’s answer? Parking is not a problem; it could merely be a “perception” of a problem. The city will commission a parking study, but only after the council makes its design choice, which could come as soon as April. That’s when we enter tourism’s shoulder season.
Maybe concerned citizens ought to reimagine a downtown parking structure for their imaginary cars. Might not be a bad idea to reimagine traffic flow, too, since all four of the designs channel traffic away from commerce and choke down loading zones. And as long as we’re engaging in fantasy, let’s all manifest a collective vision of who is paying for this.
