The Families in School Literacy Program finished the 2015-2016 school year on Thursday, April 28 with its sixth and final Family Night of the year at Ignacio Elementary School.

The program also sponsored Reading Wednesday once a week at lunch, when family members came to school to eat lunch and spend the rest of the lunch hour reading books with their students.

Also, Brainy Bobcat Summer Activity Packets will go home with students so they can keep their flex their brain muscles during the summer months.

"All these activities provide an avenue for families to be involved in the education of their children," explained Jackie Candelaria, the Families in School coordinator for the Pine River Community Learning Center, which operates the program in conjunction with the school. "That education, if it is to be successful, is threefold....the children/students, the teachers, and lastly, a supportive family!"

Although it's often hard for families to juggle jobs, finances, family and schoolwork, Candelaria said students want their parents to attend school activities.

"I love being with my family, and I love that they can come to school and see what I'm learning!" one child said at Family Night.

One father noted that his son wanted to go to Family Night so badly, he dragged his tired dad off the sofa.
