Sex abuse appeals to be sped up

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis has moved to speed up rulings on appeals by clergy who have been accused of sex abuse of minors and other grave abuses.

The Vatican announced on Tuesday that the pope is setting up a panel, made up of seven cardinals or bishops, to examine appeals that reach the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The Congregation is cracking down on priests who sexually abuse children, but critics say the Vatican is moving too slowly to decide the ultimate fate of these priests.

An advocacy group for abuse victims says the pope should work on prevention and submit all complaints to the legal system. David Clohessy executive director of SNAP, Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, says the pope’s successes in governance and outreach have not extended to the clergy abuse crisis.

Preacher takes aim at speaking record

LEESBURG, Fla. – A central Florida preacher gave a sermon that lasted more than two days – and that could become a new world record.

Cross Mount Dora church member David Douglas told the Leesburg Daily Commercial that Zach Zehnder began presenting the Bible from Genesis to Revelation at 7 a.m. Nov. 7 and finished at 12:21 p.m. Sunday. That’s 53 hours and 18 minutes.

The pastor’s speech was streamed live at www.longestspeechever.com. It will be part of the documentation needed for the Guinness Book of World Records. Organizers say the event also raised more than $90,000 for an addiction recovery program.

The former Guinness record holder was Vickrant Mahajan of India, who spoke for 48 hours and 31 minutes.

According to Guinness rules, Zehnder was allowed a five-minute break every hour and could save them up for a longer one.

Baptists vote to sever ties over gay marriage

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Kentucky Baptists have voted to sever ties with a Louisville church that is open to performing same-sex marriages.

Baptist leaders from around the state gathered Tuesday in Bowling Green for the Kentucky Baptist Convention’s annual meeting. They voted overwhelmingly to end their longstanding relationship with Crescent Hill Baptist Church.

The church’s pastor has said the church is open to performing same-sex marriages and ordaining gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual members. Crosby made a plea to allow the church to remain a part of the convention.
