DeColores Civitan Club recognizes clergy week

The DeColores Civitan Club of Durango will honor local clergy during Clergy Appreciation Week from Sunday through Feb. 9.

During the appreciation week, Janet Oliver, president of the club, said DeColores Civitan would like to recognize clergy of all faiths for their service to the community.

Civitan International began the appreciation week as a commemoration of the four military chaplains during World War II who were aboard the USS Dorchester. On Feb. 3, 1943, the ship was torpedoed in the North Atlantic, and the chaplains helped to quiet the soldiers, finally sacrificing their lives when they gave their life jackets to soldiers.

Time is set aside each year to remember this heroic deed and pay tribute to all clergy who dedicate themselves to making this a better world.

For more information, call Oliver at 382-5375.

Jimmy Carter writing book on women’s rights

NEW YORK – Jimmy Carter’s next book will be a defense of women’s rights and an attack against those who use religion to deny them.

Simon & Shuster announced Tuesday that the former president’s “A Call To Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power” will be published March 25. The publisher says Carter will draw upon personal observations from his worldwide travels as he condemns abuses of women and girls and the alleged distortions of religious texts cited as justification.

The 89-year-old Carter has written a wide range of books since leaving office in 1981, from memoirs and poetry to a controversial work on the Middle East, “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.”
