First United Methodists to begin sermon series
First United Methodist Church, 2917 Aspen Drive, will begin a new sermon series called “Half-Truths” on Jan. 9 and 10.
Pastor Jeff Huber will begin the year with a five-week series of sermons.
Half-truths or simple phrases can sound Christian, like something people might find in the Bible. They capture some element of truth, but they also miss the point in very important ways.

Congregation Har Shalom to host ‘First Friday’ event
Congregation Har Shalom, 2537 County Road 203, will host “First Friday: Coming to America, Coming to Durango, Coming to Judaism” at 6 p.m. Jan. 8.
Joan Green will begin the First Friday series for 2016 with the story of her grandmother, Ida Jolles, a business titan at a time when women were excluded from commerce. Jolles snatched her family from the Nazis when Germany annexed Austria.
Participants are invited to bring their own stories and hear true stories of other members. A potluck dinner be served.

Church to offer nine-week program about finances
“Financial Peace University: Change Your Future by Learning How to Control Your Money with Dave Ramsey” will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays from Jan. 13 to March 9 at the First United Methodist Church, 2917 Aspen Drive.
This is a nine-week class. Dinner will be provided before the class from 5:15 to 6 p.m. and free child care is available upon request.
Financial Peace University kits are available for purchase in the church office.
