How very sad that the City of Durango has let itself be cowed into removing the Arc of History.
If the “haters” didn’t participate in the process of choosing the artist and the art itself, they shouldn’t get to decide after the fact.
There was ample opportunity for their voices to be heard and to participate in the decision-making.
I am a landscape designer (for 36 years) in Arizona; I summer in Durango. My family has a Colorado history that dates from the 1880s. I think the Arc of History looks like a graceful bird soaring through the pass at the intersection.
The rock is a significant nod to the early history of Durango. Early inhabitants were ranchers and miners. Early homes were built of stone. It’s a beautiful combination of grace and history.
I do not think the vocal minority should dictate its removal.
Shame on the city commission!
