I am concerned about Mr. Hurd's desire to cut the Federal Department of Education. Does he realize how much that will hurt families in his district?
Does Mr. Hurd know that majority of schools in our district get Federal Title I funds? If those funds are cut, schools in our most cash-strapped rural districts will have to cut even more services like bussing or music, arts, or sports. Or they may have to close altogether.
How many families in Congressional District 3 have children with Individual Education Plans or 504 Plans (which mandate services for children with disabilities and medical issues)? The federal Department of Education protects the children and families from districts that decide that required accommodations isn't in next year's budget plan.
How many families have young people who are getting Pell Grants or federal student loans? The Department of Education provides those. How will our young people get the training they need to get better jobs?
On Mar. 18, when I talked to Mr. Hurd's representative on the phone, she claimed that those services would be provided through other channels, but she didn't say what those channels would be. Then, she hung up on me when I asked her for more information.
It doesn’t seem like Hurd, or the people he actually seems to serve – Trump and Musk – have any concept of a plan for providing services his constituents need after they’ve cut the department that provides these services.
