“Coloradans have a deep, unifying love and affection for our shared national public lands and the essential, diverse benefits they provide to everyone.” That powerful opening from Colorado's recently passed Senate Joint Resolution 26-015 – co-sponsored by our own Rep. Katie Stewart – captures exactly why so many of us choose to live here, and why we must continue to stand up for keeping public lands in public hands.
Southwest Colorado communities are inseparable from the public lands that surround us. These lands anchor our economy, protect our wildlife, and sustain our outdoor way of life. From Phil's World to Animas Mountain to the Weminuche Wilderness, these are places that define us – and places worth fighting for.
The threats to our public lands will not let up in the months ahead. But the resolve of Rep. Stewart and her colleagues in the state legislature – who clearly understand what's at stake and are willing to act – gives me real hope. Well done, Rep. Stewart.
