During the “Great War” (1914-1918) approximately 18 million military personnel were killed, while 23 million were wounded.
The expression “cannon fodder” was given to the men who were sent to die for a war they didn’t understand while the wealthy and higher military officers remained unscathed. From the cannon fodder expression came a quote: “We sacrifice the many to benefit the few.”
This is a truth in all wars.
Now comes the continued war on the Affordable Care Act, where Medicaid expansion has given life and hope to millions who, prior to the act, had limited or no health care resources.
The Republican Congress is willing to sacrifice the many to benefit the few, who in this case are the wealthy who will be given a substantial tax break. Is it a lack of conscience or just disinterest in those who suffer? A continued attack on President Obama? An attempt at saving face after years of combat to repeal the act that has given millions of the struggling poor a chance for improved health?
Or is it just tax breaks for many Congresspersons? What is it that could persuade Republicans to commit this vile attempt at sacrificing the many?
As a nurse united with millions of other nurses, I write as a reminder that we support the ACA and are not willing to sacrifice the many.
We will all be voting in 2018 and 2020.
