A letter to The Herald (Aug. 1) from Mike Sigman of Durango is headlined, “
I assure you, Mr. Sigman, nearly all Democrats are critical of the president, his appointees and Republican members of Congress, but they don’t despise America. To engage in free and open criticism and expression of opinion is being American.
I don’t think Republicans despise America either, though one might be forgiven for thinking so. Consider that nearly all Republicans in Congress, including, sad to say, Sen. Cory Gardner and Rep. Scott Tipton, continue to support, defend and enable the most dishonest, corrupt, crude and cruel president in American history, even though over 1,000 former Republican and Democratic federal prosecutors signed a statement attesting to their agreement that he would have been indicted for obstruction of justice were he not a sitting president.
And this obstruction was not just a technical violation. It was, and is, a continuing vigorous effort to impede, and if possible, stop, investigation of criminal Russian interference in our electoral process in an effort to get Trump elected, interference that is continuing today and threatens the integrity of our 2020 elections, interference that this administration and Republicans have shown no interest in stopping or even slowing down.
Republicans could support an honorable candidate to run for president in 2020. That they’re sticking with Trump reveals that, though they may not despise America, they don’t care about American democracy.
