About 10 people were searching Sunday night for a 23-year-old man who became separated from his party during a hike south of Haviland Lake a little before 5 p.m..

The man was dressed in a tank top and shorts, and it was unknown if he had food or water, said Tom Brueckner, mission coordinator for the search, which was being conducted by La Plata County Search and Rescue.

“We want to remind everyone to dress for the weather and to be prepared for unforeseen weather,” he said.

Searchers, who were in the field after 10 p.m. Sunday, were using a search dog, and they were trying to get a location for the missing man’s cellphone, Brueckner said.

Searchers have talked with other members of the hiking party and have a good idea of where the missing hiker might be, but Brueckner said they were unsure if the man was stationary or moving.

Searchers were focusing on a triangular area between Chris Park, Haviland Lake and Forebay Lake, he said.

Brueckner did not release the missing man’s name.
