Residents asked to report bear and trash incidents

With bear activity picking up, city and county residents are asked to report incidents of trash containers allowed to be accessed by bears. Both the city and county bear and trash ordinances are complaint-driven, meaning they require residents reporting violations to be effective. Gone unreported, no action is taken.

If residents would like to help reduce human-bear conflict and make where they live safer for both residents and bears, it’s important to report violations.

City of Durango residents may report violations to City Code by calling 375-4930, and county residents should contact Animal Protection by calling Central Dispatch at 385-2900.

Residential bear-resistant trash containers are now available from all local waste haulers, including those serving La Plata County residents.
