Two sleeping residents escaped an early morning fire in Bayfield after they were awakened by sounds of falling debris and found smoke in the living room, according to Upper Pine Fire Chief Bruce Evans.
Upper Pine was paged at around 2:34 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 1 for a fire at 22 S. Los Pinos Drive. First responders saw smoke and flames coming from the front eaves and the attic.
Responders got the fire under control in about 10 minutes, but firefighters remained on the scene for several more hours.
Engine crews from Los Pinos and Durango Fire also responded.
Evans said 19 firefighters responded with two water tenders, three engines, a medium duty rescue truck, and an ambulance.
He said the cause is under investigation. Preliminary findings suggest clearance problems on the vent pipe of a wood stove.
"The home was properly outfitted with smoke detectors, and a quick response from the crew just a few blocks away kept this from being a catastrophic event," Evans said. No injuries were reported, and initial damage estimates are placed at $68,000.
