No matter how Bayfield’s 2025 girls soccer season was destined to turn out, Sydney Rey wasn’t about to let anything go down without giving it her all, injured or not.
Though unable to play at peak power as the campaign progressed, due to working a weary hip back into shape, Rey reaped rewards due a college-recruited senior capable of leading a solid squad or carrying a struggling one. When the Colorado High School Activities Association’s 2025 All-State Girls Soccer Teams were announced at the end of May, Rey was included for the fourth time in her decorated career.
The Wolverines’ golden boot (most goals), forward of the year, leadership and overall MVP recipient and also a first team all-league pick (for the fourth time), Rey’s BHS days ended with her receiving her third honorable mention All-3A salute to go with her second team All-3A selection in ’23.
“Sydney’s come into her own,” assistant coach Eddie Bailey said, following a late-season home match. “Being much more aggressive and more captain-like – where she’s taking command of the team and really getting everyone else involved – on the field …. I feel like that mentality’s come through her senior year. She’s been a great … jump-start to our program.”
“I try to work as hard as I can,” said Rey. “Freshman year I came in and nobody really knew who I was; my whole entire job was just to dribble as fast as I could, go toward the goal. But I think this year I utilized my passing skills, my communication, dribbling, speed and just utilized my team.”
Fellow seniors Kambrie Byrd and Tanna Owens were named honorable mention all-league, despite BHS finishing an uncharacteristic 0-6-0 in 3A Intermountain League play and 2-12 overall with four one-goal losses.
Statewide, player of the year props went to Colorado Academy senior Celina Frenz, and coach of the year to Timnath’s Tyler Arko. Frenz helped Denver-based CA go 10-0-0 in 3A/2A Metro action and finish 17-1-2 overall after defeating Timnath (13-5-2, 7-0-1 3A/4A Longs Peak) 3-1 in the state championship on May 20.
Directed from the bench by repeat IML Girls Soccer Coach of the Year Kelly Wubben, Alamosa ended up 5-0-1 in league and finished 10-2-2 overall after losing 1-0 to Broomfield’s Holy Family in the opening round of 32 in state. Eighth-seeded AHS (Holy Family was seeded 25th) lost in the next round to Stargate School.
Alamosa senior Emily Tibbitts was named first team All-IML, as well as goalie of the year, and joined Rey in receiving honorable mention All-3A. Junior Jayden Wubben was voted first team all-league and also player of the year.
