Richard Schmittel was sworn in Friday as La Plata County Court’s new judge.
Roughly 90 people packed into a La Plata County courtroom to watch as Schmittel took his oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution and receive his robe. Once sworn in, the courtroom erupted with applause and Schmittel’s friends and family engulfed him in hugs and handshakes.
“It’s like attending your own funeral,” Schmittel joked. “I’m overwhelmed by all the love and support, and I’m very excited to start.”

In his new role in Colorado’s 6th Judicial District, Schmittel will preside over cases involving misdemeanors, traffic violations, civil cases under $25,000, evictions and protection orders.
“I intend to serve the community with a balance of accountability, empathy and compassion,” Schmittel said.
Schmittel previously worked as a lawyer in Westminster and has a background in criminal and civil litigation. He was appointed by Colorado Lt. Gov. Diana Primavera on June 10 to serve as the new judge in La Plata County, being selected over two other finalists.
