Because a visitor in a wheelchair recently had trouble finding transportation from the Durango-La Plata County Airport, Road Runner Transit wants it known that it can make arrangements to pick up passengers from the airport who have disabilities, according to a news release.
Road Runner Transit makes four round trips per weekday between Ignacio and Durango, traveling along Colorado Highway 172 and going right by Airport Road.
The service will make arrangements to pick up or drop off passengers with disabilities up to a mile off the route, which includes the airport.
Its vehicles are equipped with wheelchair lifts that can accommodate people in heavy, motorized wheelchairs.
Road Runner will pick up passengers with disabilities who are by the front door of the airport. If the flight is late, the bus will not wait.
The transit service is provided by the Southern Ute Community Action Programs, which receives federal money. As a requirement of federal funding, it must provide transportation to those with disabilities.
Road Runner, however, is not able to provide the same airport service to those who are not disabled.
When serving the disabled, Road Runner Transit stipulates that it can do a scheduled service during the week but not on weekends when it is not in service. To make an appointment, call (970) 563-4545.
