Road to be named for late Tribal Chairman

County Road 322 south of Ignacio will be named in honor of the late Southern Ute Tribal Chairman Jimmy Newton Jr., who died one year ago.

The county commissioners approved naming the road in his honor Tuesday. Newton died on March 31 last year.

There also will be a memorial dedication to Newton today at noon between the SunUte Community Center and the Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy. The ceremony will include an invocation by Eddie Box, Jr. a welcome from Elaine Newton, the mother of Jimmy Newton, Jr., remarks by tribal council, a performance by Yellow Jacket Drum Group, and balloon release.

All are welcome, according to an invitation on the tribe's facebook page.
