Roadrunners run into FLC’s wall

Skyhawks block 20 in a 5-set win at Whalen Gym

This time, the fifth set was kind to Fort Lewis College volleyball.

And the block had plenty to do with the victory.

FLC threw up 20 blocks against Metro State and shook off Thursday night’s defeat for a 3-2 victory over the Roadrunners on Friday at Whalen Gymnasium.

The 20 blocks were the most against a Metro State squad since 2003, according to the Metro State sports information department. The wall at the net helped FLC score the 20-25, 25-21, 28-26, 21-25, 15-12 victory.

Madi Bickle had 10 kills, 10 block assists and one solo block for the Skyhawks (6-14, 6-6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference). Stephani Sonka had eight block assists, and Ashley Wells powered the offense with 20 kills to go with 13 digs.

Jenna Kinzer had 24 digs for FLC, and Ally Dell’Amico added 13. Heather Danny had 42 assists and eight digs for the Skyhawks.

Alysa Heath paced the Roadrunners (12-8, 8-4 RMAC) with 20 kills, and Kyle Haun had 18 kills and 19 digs. Lauren Quijano had 10 kills for Metro State, and Betty Van Lith had 35 assists.

The Skyhawks will wrap their three-game homestand at 5 p.m. Saturday when they host Regis at Whalen Gymnasium.
