Robbery suspect turns himself in

Surveillance video on social media prompted move
Tallman

Durango police have arrested Jake Ryan Tallman, 19, in connection with an armed robbery Wednesday at a Subway near Walmart.

Tallman turned himself in Sunday, accompanied by his lawyer, John Baxter, and his father the Durango Police Department said in a news release Monday.

Tallman was motivated to turn himself in after a surveillance video was released on social media last week, police said.

Tallman did not give a statement at the time of his arrest, police said. The Tallman family is cooperating fully with law enforcement. Evidence from the armed robbery, including a handgun, have been seized.

Tallman, a Bayfield resident, is charged with armed robbery, a Class 3 felony. Bail for Tallman was set at $25,000.

Tallman was also booked on a felony shoplifting warrant out of Farmington. The bail on that warrant was $7,500.

In the robbery Wednesday, the young man stole $300 from the store around 10 p.m., according to a police statement. The man entered the store while two female employees were getting ready to close the sandwich shop.

He went straight into the bathroom, and when he came out, he stared at the employees for a short time. Then he pulled a small, black semiautomatic pistol from his jacket, the statement said.

He told both employees to put their hands in the air and told them to follow his instructions, so the robbery didn’t turn into a murder.

Then he told one of the employees to empty the cash register and tip jar into a bag. He took the bag and left the store on foot.

After he left, one employee set off a panic alarm while the other called 911. Neither one was hurt, the statement said.
