Now that state Sen. Ellen Roberts, R-Durango, is in a party leadership position in the Colorado Senate, she can’t be the liberal Republican from Durango anymore. She has to toe the tea party, I mean, Republican line.
In that vein, she sponsored and helped pass a bill in the Colorado Senate that allows parents to exempt their children from being vaccinated. They can be exempted for any reason, even if it puts other children at risk of contracting terrible diseases.
A Herald editorial said she should know better. Well, actually she does know better. It’s just that in her new leadership position, she has to forget about science, public health and unbiased education. So now she’ll make sure there will be enough unvaccinated children in our schools to bring back the diseases we thought we’d gotten rid of. She’ll make sure we can’t get help from our doctors when we’re terminal and want to die. She’ll make it difficult for children to take sex-education courses. And of course, she’ll give our taxpayer money to private (read religious) schools.
I suppose if I’d been offered a leadership position, I’d be quick to change my views, too. Power and money are hard to resist.
