As a historian, I do not pretend to be an artist or to understand art. However, when a piece of art calls itself “The Arc of History,” I feel compelled to comment.
How sad that with so much local and regional history in Durango, our recent sculpture set at the U.S. Highway 550/160 intersection communicates nothing about where we live. A true arc of history could have used symbols or representations of mountains, rivers, trains, Native Americans, pioneers, miners and settlers. Instead, we have a piece of nonsensical modern art that belongs in a junkyard.
If the art community and the City Council insist on leaving that ridiculous sculpture in place, at least change its name. It looks like a rock banana to me.
