Rodney and Kristie Carriker drove their horse-drawn chuck wagon from Hesperus to Durango/La Plata Senior Center on Friday. The journey took about five hours. The Carrikers will compete today in the La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen’s Association’s 10th annual Chuck Wagon Cook-Off, being held in conjunction with the 78th annual Fiesta Days. “I’ve got these horses, and it gives me a good chance to use them,” Rodney said of the trip, which the couple normally makes from Mancos.
Bob Cooper, left, and Davin Montoya drive their mule-drawn wagon along Main Avenue. The two started on South Camino del Rio and soon caught up with friends Rodney and Kristie Carriker. Cooper and Montoya also will compete in today’s cook-off, which begins at 9 a.m. Food will be judged at 5 p.m.
