Rotary clubs give shelter residents good zzz’s

People who are working to turn their lives around need a good night’s sleep. So the Volunteers of America’s Durango Community Shelter and Southwest Safehouse will be getting new mattresses on all 60 beds courtesy of the Rotary clubs in Durango.

Durango’s three clubs – the Rotary Club of Durango, also called the Tuesday night club, High Noon and Rotary Club of Durango Daybreak – applied for a matching grant from Rotary District 5470, which covers much of Colorado, and raised $10,000 for the project.

They’re not just writing a check. Members from the clubs will have a work day to clean rooms and dorms, dispose of the old mattresses, clean beds, install the new mattresses and remake them with fresh linens so they’ll be ready for residents of the two facilities that night.

The mattress change-out is scheduled to take place the second week in December, just in time to provide peaceful holiday slumbers.
