More aerially efficient than in the previous week's win over Olathe, Bayfield passers threw for three touchdowns last Friday night and threw Gunnison for a major loop in winning on the road, 27 to 7.
That is, the Cowboys were expecting the Emmitt but got more of the Aikman.
Sure, turf terror Zane Phelps got through ninth-ranked [CHSAANow.com Class 2A poll, 10/5] Gunnison's defense for yet another rushing touchdown, but knowing Gunnison would be doing their best to know his whereabouts at all times, the #2 Wolverines also proved they could move forward with arms as well as legs.
Senior receiver Wyatt Freier snared two touchdowns, one from senior regular Kelton McCoy and one from fellow senior receiver Taed Heydinger. Later, Heydinger also found himself on the scoring end of a McCoy throw, making for a neatly-knit group.
It took a full quarter to get going before GHS' Homecoming Week crowd, but Bayfield (5-0, 2-0 Western Slope Conference-South) made their move in the second quarter, with Heydinger pitching and catching six-pointers and Phelps powering over the goal line. The Cowboys' task became like ascending nearby Monarch Pass on an ice-packed U.S. 50 in whiteout-blizzard weather with bald, underinflated tires.in a Yugo.
Up next BHS takes a far shorter trip Friday to meet Montezuma-Cortez at Panther Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. against M-CHS (2-4, 1-1.) Cortez narrowly won-by a 10-7 margin-against Pagosa Springs (1-5, 0-2) last week at Golden Peaks Stadium.
Now 3-3 overall, 1-1 in conference, Gunnison-bumped out of this week's top 10-will look to bounce back tonight in the San Luis Valley at Alamosa (2-4, 2-0.)
