The Durango High School football team only needed 17 plays on offense to score seven first-half touchdowns Friday at Eagle Valley. The Demons led 49-0 at halftime and eventually won 62-8.
Zach Haber scored the first two touchdowns for DHS on runs of 2-yards and 15-yards. Jeric Baruch rushed into the end zone twice, from 2-yards and 7-yards. Quarterback Tyler Harms threw three touchdowns in the first half – a 34-yard strike to Tagert Bardin, a 52-yard connection with Jaxen Fancher and a 5-yarder to Fancher just before halftime.
With a running clock in the second half, DHS ate most of the third quarter on its next scoring drive and cruised to a victory.
The Demons, winners of six straight, are now 7-1 overall and 3-0 in 3A League 3. EVHS slipped to 1-6, 1-2.
The Demons, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A behind Roosevelt, will play what will likely be their final regular season game at 1 p.m. Saturday against Palisade (2-5, 1-1) at DHS. Durango was scheduled to play Battle Mountain the following week, but the Huskies canceled the remainder of their season about two weeks ago, forfeiting the remainder of their games. Eagle Valley’s lone win was against Battle Mountain, 54-6.
The Bayfield High School football team faced Delta on Friday in the team’s final home game, but was unable to give the No. 2 2A Panthers their first loss. Delta, the 2A League 5 leader, led 20-0 after the first quarter, 41-0 at halftime and eventually won the game 48-6. The Wolverines kept fighting and got on the scoreboard in the final two minutes of the game.
BHS (0-8 overall, 0-3 2A League 5) will conclude its season Friday at Pagosa Springs (3-5, 2-1).
The Bobcats also faced a tough foe on Friday, the defending 1A state champs from Centauri. CHS gave Ignacio a second consecutive loss, 41-8.
Ignacio (4-3, 2-2) will wrap up its regular season at home on Friday against Del Norte (2-5, 0-3). Only 16 teams will make the 1A state playoffs, and Ignacio currently ranks No.18 in RPI.
Behind a highlight outing from sophomore Alexis Hobie, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team opened homecoming weekend with a decisive sweep of Westminster College on Friday 25-23, 25-15, 25-19. FLC improves to 8-11 overall and 6-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Westminster dips to 5-16, 3-10.
Hobie charted a double-double with a match-high 17 kills and 15 digs. Junior Lauren Shea put away 11 kills while sophomore Natalia Lambos orchestrated an efficient offense with 34 assists.
FLC was also scheduled to play Colorado Mesa on Saturday as this paper was going to press.
A penalty-kick strike from Sabrina Reyes, followed by a score from Madyson Barela, lifted the Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team to an important 2-0 win over Black Hills State University on Friday. FLC improves to 5-10-1 overall and 4-6 in the RMAC and needs just one more win to secure a spot in the conference tournament. The Skyhawks have two more chances at home.
FLC will host MSU Denver (10-2-4, 6-1-3 RMAC) at 1:30 p.m. Sunday and Western Colorado (5-10-1, 3-7-0) at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
After trailing by a quartet of goals midway through the first half, the Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team rallied late but couldn’t dig out of its early hole and fell 4-3 to Regis University on a frigid Thursday night.
Loic Jean-Baptiste gave the Skyhawks a spark in the ninth minute, evading a pair of Rangers and scoring back-right corner of the goal with his left foot to cut the Rangers’ lead to 2-1.
Regis answered just moments later and added a fourth goal later in the half.
FLC nearly fought all the way back.
Jean-Baptiste scored his second goal from just outside the top right corner of the penalty box in the 59th minute. Moments later Isaac Garro found the back of the net.
FLC fell to 3-11-2, 2-7-0 while Regis advanced to 7-8-2, 4-3-2.
FLC will conclude its season at home at 11 a.m. Sunday against South Dakota Mines.
The Skyhawks (0-6, 0-5) were also set to take on South Dakota Mines (4-3, 1-3) on Saturday for its homecoming contest as this paper was going to press. The teams have played six times over the years and each has won three games. Visit DurangoHerald.com to see how the Skyhawks fared.
