Roundup: FLC football falls in opener

Fort Lewis football drops opener

Fort Lewis College quarterback Braden Wingle threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Zach Gaumont to cut William Jewell College’s lead to 7-6 in both teams’ season opener on Saturday in Missouri. Unfortunately for FLC, the Skyhawks were unable to find the end zone again while the Cardinals got hot. FLC eventually lost 42-6 to start its year 0-1.

FLC will be on the road again next week against Arizona Christian University for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Saturday. FLC will then host New Mexico Highlands for its home opener on Sept. 16.

DHS golf finishes second in Cortez

The Durango High School boys golf team finished second behind Montezuma-Cortez High School on Thursday at the Conquistador Golf Club in Cortez. Vince Lopez of Cortez shot a 73 on his home course to win the tournament. Bailey Burke of DHS finished one stroke behind Lopez in second, while Owen Muraro shot a 75 to tie for third and Henry Howe tied for fifth at 78. Wyatt Lafferty and Rosario Rypkema tied for 10th at 81 while Eli Holden finished 12th at 82.

Cortez won the team title with a 231, followed by Durango (242), Fruita Monument (246), Gunnison (254), Grand Junction Central (258), Farmington (259), Pagosa Springs (259), Piedra Vista (260), Telluride (301) and Aztec (305). If DHS’ top three finishers would have scored for the team, however, DHS would have carded a first-place 226. The Demons, however, had 13 players compete, including five others who broke 90, who are all battling for a spot on DHS’ regional team.

DHS volleyball moves to 4-0

The DHS girls volleyball team beat Montezuma-Cortez in straight sets handily on Thursday to improve to 4-0 overall. DHS won 25-10, 25-10 and 25-13 to sweep the Panthers at DHS. The Demons had 26 kills in the game, with Aava Dreger spiking 10 to lead the team. Tyler Trujillo made 12 digs, Eva Stewart had 13 assists while DHS served six aces as a team in the win.

BHS volleyball falls to San Juan

The Bayfield High School volleyball traveled to Utah on Thursday to take on the San Juan Broncos. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, they returned empty-handed. San Juan swept BHS 25-21, 25-11 and 25-18.

BHS is now 1-4 overall and will begin its 3A Intermountain season on Tuesday at Montezuma-Cortez (1-3).

Demon soccer wins second consecutive

The DHS boys soccer team improved to 3-1 overall with a 4-1 win over Pueblo West on Friday. DHS took a 3-0 lead into halftime and never looked back. The Demons were also scheduled to play at Mead on Saturday.

Durango softball loses to league foe

The DHS softball team hosted Grand Junction for a doubleheader on Saturday. The Demons managed to score seven runs in the two contests, but was unable to pull out a win. GJHS won the first game 10-4 and the second 11-3 to improve to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the 5A/4A Southwestern League.

The Demons slipped to 1-9, 1-3, but have a week to prepare for its next contest Sept. 12 at Cortez.

FLC volleyball splits opening games

After losing its first game of the year 3-0 against Dallas Baptist University, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team came back and won its second game of the Patriot Classic on Friday. Squaring off against St. Edwards, FLC lost the first two sets 25-9 and 25-17, but rallied and won the next three sets 25-23, 25-20 and 17-15 to win the match.

FLC women’s soccer scores opening draw

Fort Lewis College’s Aubrey Swindle assisted Amber Otts late in the first half to tie Eastern New Mexico in the team’s season opener on Saturday in neutral Alamosa. Nether team managed goal in the second, however, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Ignacio volleyball starts tournament strong

The IHS volleyball team won its first three games of the West Grand tournament by 3-0 margins, sweeping South Park, Cedaredge and Gilpin County to improve to 5-1 overall. The only team so far to beat Ignacio, Mancos (6-0), is who the Bobcats were scheduled to play in the championship game.
